Journal of a voyage kept by Thomas W. Abbot, who was clerk of the merchant ship John G. Coster, commanded by D.P. Benjamin, bound for Canton, China, from New York City during the American war with Mexico. The ship's passengers included George Townsend, Gilmore Meredith, and R.P. Dana. On the return voyage, the ship fell in with an American naval convoy commanded by Captain Henry in the sloop-of-war Plymouth. The journal describes daily activities of passengers on board the ship, the daily weather, distance traveled, Whampoa and Canton, encounters with various American merchants in those cities, and the Naval convoy at sea. It contains manuscript maps and nautical charts as well.
